Enclosed or underground car parks are primarily ventilated to remove harmful pollution from vehicle emissions, providing fresh air for patrons. Ventilation is also a requirement in the event of a fire to remove hot smoke, allowing escape and providing access for fire fighters.
Ventilation rates for car parks vary, most being based on either an air change rate, rate per parking space or to dilute pollutants. These are specified in the relevant building regulations. And vary between general (pollution) and emergency (smoke) ventilation.
Traditional car park ventilation systems use extract (sometimes supply) fans in conjunction with ductwork, to distribute air around the car park, providing a common system for both pollution and smoke removal. The positioning of extract points within a system is not always ideal. Fresh air is sometimes exhausted before it has becomes polluted, or conversely it becomes excessively
polluted. This can also result in fresh air being exhausted during emergency operation rather than being distributed throughout the car park.
FlaktWoods innovative car park ventilation system utilizes Jetfoil fan technology together with operation of the main fans, eliminating many of the problems associated with conventional ducted systems.
FlaktWoods system is based around the operation of small Jetfoil fans installed in the ceiling of the car park, positioned throughout to control the distribution of air. They can be used to create a flow of air at both low and high level, effectively using the same air twice, resulting in
a more efficient use of air than associated with traditional systems.
Jetfoil fans act in a similar way to a traditional ducted system, pulling air into the fan inlet (like a grille), and discharging it at a high level towards the extract points (like a duct).
A typical system includes the provision of main extract fans, supply fans (if required), Car Park Jetfoil fans, detection systems for pollution and smoke, CFD analysis, and the main control panel. This enables the system to be designed around the specific requirements of the car park
and ensures the system operates as designed.
